Description
The Long Island fishermen were once a way of life, a tradition on the east end of Long Island. At one time generations of “Baymen” made a living on the waters here. To me the Dory symbolizes their main tool of livelihood. It’s iconic, a vessel of hope and hard work. I’ve used this image often in my work. Seeing the Baymen launch their dories into the surf was one of the first memories when I moved here over thirty years ago. They have since disappeared. The commercialization of the fishing industry all but destroyed their way of life. A great book to read on this subject is Peter Matthiessen’s “Men’s Lives”. http://easthamptonstar.com/News/2014406/Peter-Matthiessen-Author-Explorer-Zen-Priest-Dead-86
