The Montauk Point Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in New York State.  It is the fourth oldest lighthouse in The United States. The foundation, 13’ deep and 9’ thick, is constructed of sandstone blocks that were brought over from Connecticut. The walls are 6’ thick at the base, and taper to 3’ thick at the top. Today there are 137 iron steps to the top. The tower stands 110’ 6” in height from its base and 154’ from sea level. In 1900, the tower was given its reddish brown and white horizontal stripes, distinguishing its day mark. Today the light flashes every 5 seconds and can be see as far away as 19 nautical miles.
