Portland Head Light is Maine’s oldest lighthouse and one of Maine’s most popular tourist attractions. It is located on an isolated point of rock in Fort Williams Park, Maine.  Longfellow, inspired by this lighthouse wrote the words, “a dim, gigantic shape, Holding its lantern o’er the restless sea”, in his famous poem, The Lighthouse. In 1786, the District of Maine was a part of Massachusetts and the merchant’s of Portland, Maine, petitioned Boston for a lighthouse.  Construction was started in 1789 and the federal government took over the operation and construction. The Portland Head Lighthouse had changed little until 1989, when the old Fresnel lens was removed, replaced with a revolving beacon. The keeper’s quarters houses a museum.
